Nerves are NORMAL. My perspective as a coach to new beginners...

Recently, I have seen some tears at Numa. These tears were from ladies starting our program for the first time. One new member hadn’t exercised in years and teared up looking at her first InBody scan results. A personal training client of mine decided to take control of her health and is starting to workout and focus on the nutrition for the first time ever. She’s in her 50‘s. She had tears during her first session.

When starting an exercise program and stepping up to make changes in your health, there is often a lot of emotions. If you want to get back to working out, but feel discouraged even thinking of getting started, let me share with you my perspective as a coach. I hope it helps!

1. Be proud of yourself for stepping out and taking action for your health! Seriously! So many of my personal training clients and members who come into class for the first time share how crazy nervous they are. It’s normal! You are doing something new and challenging! Be proud of yourself! Over time, you will get more confident and will end up loving all the benefits exercising adds to your life.

2. Know that your coaches and other classmates are FOR YOU, not against you! Most of us have been in your shoes and can relate! We are cheering you on and want the best for you! We are here to celebrate your progress as you keep going!

3. It is not about where you are now. It is about where you want to go! Think of where you would like to be in 3 months, 6 months, a year, and we will help you get there!

4. If you get a scan, look at that as your starting point! There’s only room for progress from here!

5. Focus on consistency, not perfection! Be prepared to start slow and focus on consistency as you build up strength. Real results that last take time!

6. Let go of the “all or nothing” mindset. As you get started, think about how you can make these habits last. Giving up everything you love will NOT work. Rather, think moderation and focusing on nutritious foods and healthy habits most of the time.

7. More does not equal better. Often times I have new clients who want to add in at-home workouts in addition to our 3 workouts per week at Numa. I have to talk them out of it. Overdoing it in the beginning only leads to injury and burnout. Starting out, a few quality workouts each week along with other health and nutrition goals WORKS! Does it take time? Yes! But, most importantly, it works and is sustainable! We will add more when you’re ready.

8. Plan in rest and time to recover just like you plan in your workouts. Prioritize sleep. This is so important!

9. Trust our program. Together, we have changed many lives at Numa, and we can help you change yours, too!

10. Take the time to notice and celebrate all the big and small victories along the way!
